Petsmart in Boxpark

Created in 2011 in the East End of London, BOXPARK is the world’s first pop up mall. The idea behind it is the desire for firms to have inexpensive design retail spaces to market a high-end solution. Due to the success, more BOXPARKs have opened in other cities such as Quebec, Manila and Dublin. The proposed BoxPark location for this project is in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Because of Iceland’s isolation, many animals have little resistance to diseases around the world. In 1924, Reykjavik banned keeping dogs at pets to prevent ecchinococconis - a type of tapeworm. In 1984, the 60 year old ban was lifted. However, the effect persists until today; the city’s dog laws are still tight; dogs are still not a popular pet choice; dog owners do not yet have a strong and active community.

PetSmart Inc. is an American retail chain operating in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. PetSmart calls themselves a specialty pet retailer of services and solutions for the lifetime needs of pets. Stressing “Smart” over “Mart,” the company announces its evolution from a pet supply store to a solution-oriented company.

The pop-up PetSmart in Boxpark overcomes the small size of a shipping container to stay true to the brand’s vision: not only selling pet products but also providing pet care services and a community space for pet lovers.

Inspired by the shape and colors of PetSmart’s logo, the design is dynamic, cheerful and captivating, just like the way pets enrich our lives.
